LAYERED PRODUCT or COMPONENT: BASIC 3.2 OP/SYS: VMS 5.0

SOURCE: Digital Customer Support Center

SYMPTOM:

Basic installation fails with a PLI error during the build of
the STARLET library, while restoring saveset D.

ANALYSIS:

There is a problem when you install BASIC Version 3.2 on VAX/VMS
Version 5.0 or later. While saveset D is being restored,
you will get the following diagnostics:

%PLI-F-ERROR, PL/I ERROR condition.
-system-f-accvio, access violation, reason mask=01, virtual address=
      5263dd34, pc=5263dd35, psl=03c000a0
%trace-f-traceback,...
        .
        .
        .
%rms-e-fnf, file not found
%vmsinstall-f-unexpected, installation terminated due to unexpected event.

The problem shows up when you answer YES to the following prompt:

Do you want to install the VAX/VMS system definitions [YES] ?

SOLUTION:

To work around this problem, answer NO to build the system definitions
( BASIC$STARLET ) when installing VAX BASIC. This will allow you to use
the previous version of BASIC$STARLET.TLB.

If you already attempted the installation of BASIC, and you answered
YES to build the system definitions, and you answered YES to purge
files created by this installation, it is possible that the previous
version of BASIC$STARLET.TLB no longer exists. In this case, restore
SYS$LIBRARY:BASIC$STARLET.TLB from a backup, reinstall BASIC, and
answer NO to build the system definitions.

This problem has been reported to VMS Engineering.
