QUESTION:

Do PLI Stream Files equate to RMS Stream files?

ANSWER:

The use of the term 'STREAM file' in the VAX PL/I documentation is often
confused with RMS's use of that term as a file organization. The two are
not the same.

PL/I's stream file is not the same as RMS's stream format. The
functionality built into PL/I only makes it possible for multiple statements
to process 1 record. It still deals with RMS records. Refer to the "PLI
User's Manual", version 3.0; pages 5-1 thru 5-2 for background information
on this.

Attempts to create an RMS stream file with FDL then APPEND to it with a
PL/I program does not get around this behavior.

If using RMS stream files is required in a high-level language, use a
language that supports it - like VAX C for example. Or use direct RMS
calls from within the program.
